9 What Dom Found at Monroe Park

Monroe Park was small. It had a fountain in the middle. Like a wedding cake, with layers of flowing water each higher than the other. In each corner there were beds with bushes and flowers. But just a few steps from the pirate crew, at the entrance from Fifteenth Street, there was a sundial.

If they hadn’t been on a mission, Dom would have wanted to dip her feet in the fountain, like Steph was doing the day they found her. Like the blond girl with the baseball cap and the skateboard was doing right now. She was sure Pancho and Steph wanted the same. But they had to find Mr. Kowalski’s money. In a hurry. Because Juan Largo or J.L. or whoever he was, was a real villain, and she had to get rid of him as soon as possible. She dropped her bag next to the sundial. Roco lay next to it.

“Nothing much here,” Dom said. “Guess we were wrong thinking of parks.”

“No, no,” Juan said. “You weren’t wrong. This is the right park. Here’s a sundial. We’re looking for a sundial, right?”

Pancho, Steph, and Dom stopped as if they’d run into the boom of the ship’s mast. Each looked at the other two. They had talked about parks, and trees, and numbers. True, they had talked about dials. And Rafi had mentioned a sundial. But not in front of Steph. This confirmed her suspicion. There was no way Juan Largo should have known about a sundial.

He got his information from somewhere—or someone—else! It had to be the robbers!

Pancho was the first one to come out of the trance.
